Ford EV Charging in Michigan - Home & Public Charging Guide
From scintillating performance to jaw-dropping efficiency, it’s hard to ignore the widespread appeal and popularity of an all-electric vehicle. Fortunately, Ford continues to be an industry leader in terms of pioneering and perfecting this emerging technology by building some of the most capable EVs on the market. From the work-ready Ford E-Transit to the dynamic Ford Mustang Mach-E – there’s never been a better time to embrace all the advantages of electrification.
One of the most common questions asked by potential EV buyers is how, when, and where they will charge their vehicle. Fortunately, there are now more public and home charging solutions available for Ford EVs than ever before. Preferred Ford of Grand Haven has created this helpful guide that will cover the subject of EV charging in greater detail.
How Can I Charge My Ford EV?
Charging is an important part of driving an electric vehicle. While you’re likely familiar with stopping to fill your tank with fuel, EVs require electricity stored within an onboard battery to power the vehicle. Fortunately, charging an EV is just as simple as filling your tank with gas. In some cases, it’s actually even more convenient as well! No matter if you plan to charge at home or while you’re out and about, there are three types of EV charging stations that we’ll cover in greater detail below. Known as Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 – each type has its own collection of advantages and benefits that are worth considering.
Level 1 Charging
Nearly every all-electric vehicle on the market today comes standard with what’s known as a Level 1 EVSE charging cable. Using a typical 120-volt standard household outlet, Level 1 charging allows you to charge virtually anywhere you have access to electricity. Despite the convenience, the main downside of Level 1 charging is slow charge rates. In most cases, only about 2 to 5 miles of range can be added per hour of charging time. Unless you only drive short distances on occasion, it’s generally best to consider Level 1 charging as nothing more than a solution for “topping off” your EV’s battery. Times when you’re traveling or when you don’t have access to faster charging stations are great options for Level 1 charging.
Level 2 Charging
Representing the perfect balance of convenience and versatility, Level 2 charging offers plenty of benefits that most EV owners will want to take advantage of. Ideal for individuals who plan to charge their vehicle at home, Level 2 charging stations are easily installed in your garage or driveway (professional installation required, see dealer for details). Simply plug in and charge to add between 10 and 60 miles of range per hour of charging. 240-volt electrical service is required for Level 2 charging. Ford has an extensive network of trusted partners and recommended installers to ensure that your Level 2 charging station meets local, state, and national regulations. Plug your EV in at the end of your day and wake up each morning to a fully-charged battery with Level 2 charging.
Level 3 Charging
Commonly called DC Fast Charging, Level 3 charging represents the fastest solution for charging your Ford EV. Using high-power 480-volt capabilities, Level 3 is the ultimate way to add range as quickly as possible. Level 3 charging stations are usually located in high-traffic areas like apartment complexes, office buildings, shopping centers, and rest stops. Also continuing to expand nationwide are the Blue Oval™ Charge Network and ChargePoint Network, making coast-to-coast EV travel a reality. Additional details on these networks are listed below.
